Palm Trees

I took this picture in Sarasota. Seriously who does this?

This is an example of Improper pruning of palm trees.

Palm that are over trimmed are more susceptible to wind damage, insects and disease.

Only remove palm fronds to a 9 O’Clock – 3 O’Clock position.

White Fly

Whitefly is one of the newest insects around that are affecting Plam trees.  Although this insect does not kill palms it produces Honeydew which is a very sticky substance that gets all over everything near it.  This Honeydew becomes infested with sooty mold a fungi that is dark black in color.  We offer many different options on treating white fly including using the once a year tree injection from Arbor-Jet

Skeletonizers are caterpillars that chew on the tissue of the palm. Only a severe infestation is something to worry about.  Natural predators and chemical control easily get rid of this pest

Cycad Scale

Cycad scale first emerged in Florida in the late 90’s and when it did it came in hard.  At one point the pest control industry was telling people that all they could do was to remove the plant or spray it every week for 6-8 weeks.  This scale almost wiped out the sagos in this area, but thanks to new formulations of pesticides we are now able to control this pest.
